urban needle scans rooms and urban spaces in an automated process, transforming the shape of the room into sound.
like a record needle, it plays back a room producing room-based noise. the room is the reel.

Pixelgroup is a library to group pixels in a LED-strip. It is intended to be used in the Arduino framework together with a pixel-strip library like Adafruit_NeoPixel or Adafruit_WS2801 but can be used for any kind of backend. The PixelWriter class can be used to write into a uint8_t array. The PixelWriterInterface can be used to subclass existing pixelstrip-writers or to build your own.
Pixelgroup has four basic classes:
PixelgroupBase:
– basic pixelgroup
– can set color
– If you just need to set a color in groups, use this
PixelgroupEaser:
– based on PixelgroupBase
– can do colorfades
PixelgroupStrobe:
– based on PixelgroupBase
– can strobe
Pixelgroup:
– based on PixelgroupBase
– can do colorfades
– can strobe
– can flicker
Packetizer is a class written in c++ to analyze data for a start and/or end condition. If both, start- and end-condition is met the data between start and end is returned via a callback function as raw bytes.
It is useful for serial communication where data-packets have a distinct start and/or end pattern. Each of the conditions can be several bytes long. With three callbacks it is possible to get informed if a packet starts, get the packet-data and get informed on buffer overflows.
Example | demonstrates |
---|---|
simple_packets | show basic functionality of Packetizer |
simple_proto_send_receive | the use to control another remote Arduino controls LED 13 on a remote Arduino |
simple_proto_send_receive_2 | based on simple_proto_send_receive shows the use of byte-pair packets controls the brightness of LEDs on a remote Arduino |
proposing a ritual for new years
throw your smartphone to generate a random object. a 3d-printer turns the digital data into objects. it is like pouring lead, but very modern.
interpret the resulting object to foresee your upcoming year.
some results from the new years party in 2014:
sonification of rooms (SoR) is a series of projects to translate rooms into sound. starting point was a concert of vinyl terror and horror in 2013 imagining a record needle turning in the room, instead of having a rotating record. how would that sound?
a first version was presented at the schmiede in hallein 2014. a point laser was scanning a room in an automated process playing back the measurement, creating a slowly changing noise.
SoR-I was kindly supported by micro-epsilon
“urban needle” uses the same principle for sonifying urban spaces.
It looks like economy is a gamble. A gamble in which those are winning who have enough already – the ‘big players’, multinational companies and coperations. 500 of them are ruling more than 52 percent of the gross world product.
The stabilization of this uncommonly concentration of power inter alia dues to the fact, that the capitalistic system knows how to keep itself running with diverse and sophisticated mechanisms, hidden to individuals. It is almost essential for this “machinery” that individuals are not able to see the bigger picture and be a small cog in a big machine. Like a hamster in a wheel.
FEED THE IDIOTS is a modified one-armed-bandit gambling machine and promises the same as a common slot-machines promises: “You can win!”.
The aim of the simplest form of a one-armed-bandit game is to be lucky enough to get the same symbols three times in a row.
The difference with FEED THE IDIOTS is, that the usual fruit-symbols are substituted by logos of international companies, like Santander, Unilever or BP.
We are all part of the machine: feed-the-idiots
